Is anyone using a NX2 system? I've had it with the Raymaire instruments and I'm going to make the change this winter. If anyone wants a R60 system at a good price, let me know. Has anyone moved their paddle wheel to centerline? Anyone have an Ultrasonic Speed transducer. is it worth it?

I have the nexus system and I think it is great. I know Claudio also has it on Critical. One word of caution, do not be tempted by the wireless wind as I had nothing but trouble as it would lose the signal. No advantage anyway as you have to replace the wire according to the class rules.

Also, the people at Comnav have been very helpful and accomodating when I switched my wireless wind for a wired system. The NX2 software is very easy to use with the laptop, and I love the maxi displays on the mast -- especially since you can program two data readouts per maxi.

Hi Julien,

I've used the Airmar CS4500 Ultrasonic speed transducer since 2004. I did the installation and wiring myself. It has worked perfectly with the stock ST60 Tridata display and I've been very pleased with the setup. The reason I went with the ultrasonic unit is that I was tired of having to pull and clean the paddle wheel every few weeks. There is zero maintenance with the ultrasonic unit as the diver simply wipes it during normal hull cleanings.

Cheers,
Alan

Julien;

If you (or anyone else) have any maxi displays that you want to get rid of we can talk! What did you specifically hate about the Raymarine..i may need to pick your brains..i know the calibration does not seem to hold well.

BTW, Thanks for the info on the car - turns out lewmar does not make the double car for the leads anymore in our size..Garth showed me what he did at the boat show.

Regards
John

Rod & Alan Thanks for the input. I'm even more sold.

John,

I don't trust the info I get from the raymarine instruments, I can feel a puff and then a few seconds later it registers. The instruments are a PIA to calibrate and even when calibrated I don't think they are displaying good data. The real turn offs are when you start looking at the NEMA data stream, if you want to to get the info form the raymarines into software, say Expedition. The Raymaire stuff is also very limited in is calibration ability, try to zero out the speed difference between port and starboard tack due to the paddle wheel location or change the info being displayed on the screens - you can't. The raymarine also uses SOW for all the derived functions TWA, TWS and when you are looking at that when sailing in some current the data is useless.

If all you want is basic depth, windspeed and relative boat speed (i.e. x+1 is faster then x) they are OK, however if you start running Expedition or other tactical software the limitations of the Raymarie stuff really keep you from using the software properly.

I don't have any XL's but look for some raymarine stuff in the classifieds soon. :P

I do like the raymarie SL72C chartploter / radar as well as the ST6001SG12 AP, although the user interface could be a lot better.

One of the thing I really want to do next year is detailed post race analysis and the raymaire stuff will not cut it for want I want to do.

Yes, paddlewheel centreline in the space forward of mast. And I think I shared my NX2 positive experience with you on SA.

I have been using an NX2 system for a year and like it very much. I have had to replace the ultrasonic speed transducer once due to failure of unit. Otherwise good, easy to connect with laptop and works with Expedition software well. Navigation is easy from laptop with preset marks and WCV is powerful tool; better than VMG and we use polars for TBS which is great improvement for crew and driving. Start functions are a little too complex for my crew so we use bowman and stop watch instead. Calibration is easy and very good. No comparison with old set up of raymarine instruments, tacktick and GPS. B&G is still better but NX2 better value. French friends swear by NKE and have raced on boat with it and seems good. If single/double handed racing then NKE instruments with NKE autopilot is tough to beat.

I ordered my boat with the raymarines in a box, they went on ebay,

the Nexus work great, all tied into the laptop and nav systems
